Mexico health officials issue warning over social media tranquilizer challenge: reports

Mexican health officials raised a red flag on Wednesday after students from three different Mexico City schools took part in an Internet “challenge” involving tranquilizers and seeing who could stay awake the longest. According to reports.

The Associated Press reported that the health department asked the public to report if they knew of or heard of any pharmacies selling tranquilizers without a prescription.

About a week ago, eight students at a Mexico City middle school were given medical treatment after ingesting a controlled substance.

The incident prompted the Department of Health to issue a warning about a “dangerous” social media challenge called “the last to sleep wins.”

“The call also goes out to children and adolescents not to participate in or encourage challenges that put their lives at risk,” the department wrote.

On Thursday, there was a similar incident at another school where a student overdosed on tranquilizer pills, and officials suggested it may have been linked to a social media challenge.

Earlier last week three students at a middle school in Monterey were treated for taking clonazepam, which is used to prevent and control seizures and panic attacks by calming the brain and nerves, according to WebMD.com. goes.

The Associated Press also reported that in 2022, five middle school students in Guadalajara were treated with what Gov. Enrique Alfaro described as “a strong tranquilizer”.
