Four children were killed and their parents were injured in a fire in a southwestern Serbian town, police said on Sunday.
The fire broke out around 7 a.m. in an apartment in a residential building in Novi Pazar, about 120 miles southwest of Belgrade.
Police said firefighters reached the spot within minutes of being informed but the apartment was already on fire.

Firefighters found all the children in one room. A statement said they apparently died of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Police said the parents were in another room and have been admitted to the hospital. Novosti newspaper reported that he suffered severe burns.

It was not immediately clear what caused the fire.
Police said, “Although firefighters reacted quickly and arrived at the scene, it appears that the fire broke out much earlier as it was in an advanced stage.”
