On this Women’s Day, popular actress Hansa Nandini, who was seen in notable cameos in Eega and Mirchi, revealed her heart-wrenching inspirational journey while fighting breast cancer. Hansa Nandini revealed that she was diagnosed with grade 3 carcinoma in July 2020, when she resumed shooting for a film after the lockdown. Incidentally, her mother was also battling breast cancer 18 years back and unfortunately lost her battle.

Hansa reveals that the ghosts of her past, fear, confusion and anxiety all came back to haunt her once she was diagnosed with breast cancer. After several scans and tests, she underwent a surgery to remove the tumor and also completed 16 cycles of chemotherapy, which were necessary even though the cancer had spread.

When she assumed the worst had passed, the relief was only short-lived, as she tested positive for BRCA1 (hereditary breast cancer), a genetic mutation that increased her 70 percent chance of another breast cancer throughout her life. Guaranteed. The only way to reduce the risk was to undergo some very aggressive prophylactic surgery, and that’s what she went through last year.

Hamsa has remained strong through this difficult journey and made a few promises to herself, including not letting the disease define her life, fighting with a smile, coming back strong on screen and devoting her time to educating and inspiring others. Storytelling is involved. She attributes her healthy state to 3 main factors: early diagnosis, a supportive network of capable doctors and her family, and a positive mindset.

On the films front, Hamsa was back on the sets in November last year to shoot for a film. She currently has multiple projects lined up and is eagerly waiting to make a comeback on the big screen soon. Hamsa’s courageous fight against breast cancer has earned her the nicknames ‘Warrior’ and ‘Fighter’ from her fans and on the sets as well.

Hamsa will soon launch ‘Yamini Cancer Foundation’, named after her late mother. Through this foundation, she will dedicate herself to educating everyone about early diagnosis through self-examination, regular mammography and genetic testing. She also aims to make all information about all aspects of breast cancer management and treatment easily accessible to people across India.
