The extremist group al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack, which began after military officers and Gedo administration officials in Bardhere began recruiting locals to help drive al-Shabaab out of central and lower Jubba districts.
Eyewitness Ibrahim Adan said at least 10 people, including civilians, were injured. “I have seen with my own eyes that many people, including two of my distant relatives, have been injured,” he said.
