(KTLA) – Former “Boy Meets World” star Ben Savage announced Monday he is running for Congress in California’s 30th Congress District.

Savage, best known for his role as Cory Matthews on the ABC sitcom and spin-off series “Girl Meets World,” announced his bid for the office on Instagram, saying he was a “proud Californian, union member and are longtime residents of District 30 who come from a family of unwavering service to our country and community.

“I am running for Congress because it is time to restore faith in government by offering reasonable, innovative and compassionate solutions to our nation’s most pressing issues,” the 42-year-old wrote.

Savage is running for the seat currently represented by Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff. Schiff is running to replace Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who announced she would retire at the end of her term.

California’s 30th The congressional district includes several cities including West Hollywood, Burbank, and Pasadena.

Savage starred in the hit 90s TV sitcom “Boy Meets World” from 1993 to 2000. He reprized his role – this time as a father – in the 2014 “Girl Meets World” reboot, which aired on Disney Channel until 2017.

Savage’s bid for Congress isn’t the first time the actor has been involved in a political race. The Sacramento Bee reported that he ran unsuccessfully for a seat on the West Hollywood City Council.

In mid-January, rumors began to circulate of Savage’s plans to run for Congress. At the time, his representatives told Entertainment Weekly that the actor was “still making decisions and is always looking for opportunities to give back and serve the community.”
