Naga Shaurya will next be seen in the film Falana Abbai Falana Ammai. The rom-com is being directed by Srinivas Avasarala, who is known for his gritty films. Malavika Nair is playing the lead role. Produced by People Media Factory in association with Dasari Productions, the film will release on March 17. Ahead of the release, we had a brief chat with Srinivasa Awasarla, and here is the transcript.

How realistic will the film be?

I don’t want my characters to speak regular dialogue. I usually watch a lot of independent films. The characters in those movies would be very realistic. It’s as if someone takes out a camera and starts shooting while the characters keep talking amongst themselves. It looks extremely realistic. I felt that I should do such films. Falana Abbai Falana Ammai has a simple story which is close to the people.

What’s new about Falana Abbaye Falana Ammayi?

You have to watch it on the big screen only. Normally, when Naga Shaurya and I join hands, people think we are making a film like Oohalu Gusagusalade. But Falana Abbai Falana Ammai scripted film will not work. Instead, it is a realistic attempt to explore human behavior on screen without relying on dialogues, punchlines and comedy.

Why do you take long gaps in your career?

After Ohalu Gusagusalade in 2014, I started writing Jyo Achuthananda in 2016. I usually take a year to write alone. I started Falana Abbai Falana Ammai in 2019. We faced some difficulties while shooting in USA and UK due to Covid. Our team faced visa issues and hence it took time to wrap up the shoot.

How was your experience working with Naga Shaurya?

Falana Abbayi Falana Ammayi has seven chapters, each 20 minutes long. The lead pair will be seen in different time periods and ages. Naga Shaurya had to work hard to get the look of a teenager. However, he also needs to appear as a 28-year-old. The film was shot beautifully and Naga Shaurya is very confident about the success of the film.

How did you bring Malavika Nair on board?

I explained each scene to Malavika and gave narration. She reacted emotionally, and I saw a personal connection on her face. Even the liplock scene was already in the script and it’s not like I told it on the sets. Since there was a gap due to Covid, I had to remind him about that scene again. When actors know the reason and circumstances behind such scenes, they will definitely put in extra effort to give their best.

What is the genre of the film?

It is a love story. It is a story of a boy-girl meeting and how the lead pair takes their relationship forward. The gap worked in the film’s favor, luckily. It has 7 seven chapters which need variety. If I had shot one after the other, I might have missed the desired look. Covid helped me in a way. There are no twists and turns in Falana Abbai Falana Ammayi. Instead, it is an emotional love story.

Can you tell us about your future projects?

I have a story ready with me but it has not reached the stage of narration. I haven’t finalized the actors yet. Nani and I are keen to work together and we will plan a film soon. Besides this, I am also working on a web series titled Kanyasulakam starring Anjali, Naresh, Murali Sharma and Varsha Bollamma. It will release next month.
