North Korea says ICBM launch was a ‘warning’

State media said on Friday that North Korea fired an intercontinental ballistic missile this week as a warning against ongoing US-South Korean military drills.

According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the missile was launched on Thursday with the aim of “deliberately raising tensions to the enemy”.

It was the second ICBM launched by North Korea this year, and was fired just hours before South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol was due to meet with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

The aggressive escalation draws attention to the US message on the North Korean issue.

Department of Defense Claimed on Thursday that its continuous joint military exercises with South Korea are continuing to prevent North Korean attacks.

“I think what’s important for people to understand is, one, deterrence continues to work,” Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder told reporters at the Defense Department’s daily news conference.
