Twenty-one people were killed in a fire that broke out in the east wing of the in-patient department of a hospital in the Chinese capital, Beijing, the Beijing Daily reported on Tuesday.
According to the Beijing Daily, the fire started at around 12:57 pm and was extinguished at around 13:33 pm after an emergency team arrived at the accident site at Beijing’s Changfeng Hospital.
A total of 71 people were evacuated and shifted after the rescue operation. The Beijing Daily reported that as of 6 p.m. 21 people had died after being taken to hospital for treatment.

A Weibo netizen said, “It’s sad. I can see the accident from the window of my house. At noon, many people stood on the air conditioning unit, and some even jumped.”
Hospital fires are rare in China, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
